Incunabula : Curated by Michael Mehl
Life is a road with no signs. There is no map for this thing we call life. Often we are so consumed by the distractions of life we find ourselves on autopilot. This realization is usually followed by the thought that there must be more to all this, to my life. Then we return to the beginning. Only this time we carefully observe ourselves. Every action is intensely scrutinized, not for the purpose of punishment or to boost our ego, but rather to learn from that which we did not learn before.
In Incunabula, I explore this concept by means of self-confinement. No longer is my body free to move in ways unseen by my eyes. Similar to a dancer, I am present for every move and every move is calculated. In this intimate setting, I am greeted with an awareness of my own existence and my place in time and space.
This series is an exploration of what it means to be an individual entity.
A continuation of the There is No I in ME series, an exploration of what it means to be an individual entity.
In my work, abstract and realism converge to convey a surreal or deceptive appearance as something only created by the imagination. Several ambiguous figures and forms within the work are slightly recognizable based on the subjectivity of the viewer. This works to induce a sense of familiarity with the figures and forms and to start a visual dialogue between the viewer and my work. Extending away from representational figures, a combination of various lines, shapes, and colors coalesce to create abstract forms. While a variety of colors are used to create a sense of commotion, unity and balance are achieved with the placement of color.
SURFACE is an ongoing series of portraits inspired by various textures that I encounter within my environment. New possibilities are created for everyday textures to become new again.
